About

Three people, one product, no growth targets.

How it started

In 2019 a research group at a university in Utrecht needed to keep field notes for a project with a ten-year horizon. Every app they tried stored notes in a format that depended on the app. Marlow began as a weekend script that indexed a folder of Markdown files, and the first version was handed around on a USB stick.

The public release came in 2021. It has been a paid product since 2022, which is what allows it to stay small: no investor, no hiring plan, no roadmap driven by a board.

Who works on it

Two developers and one person who does support, documentation and the release notes. Support replies come from the people who wrote the code, which is the main reason the bug tracker stays short.

Principles

Files over databases. Local over remote. Predictable over clever. When a feature would require Marlow to become the only program that can read your notes, it does not ship.
